Native to China, now grown throughout all temperate zones. Ancient living fossil with distinctive fan-shaped leaves. Long tradition of medicinal use; handsome shade tree.
Acer negundo
Fast-growing native maple suited to a range of soils. Useful understory tree for Zone 6b plantings.
Diospyros virginiana
Native fruit tree with sweet autumn persimmons and attractive bark. Wildlife-friendly and regionally adapted.

Spring-flowering native with magenta-pink blooms on bare branches. A graceful understory or specimen tree.

Thornless native shrub with large rose-purple summer flowers and maple-like leaves. Pollinator favorite.
Iris versicolor
Native wetland iris with striking blue-violet blooms. Beautiful for moist edges and rain gardens. The rhizome was used in very low doses by the Eclectic physicians as an alterative.

Iconic native perennial with a long history of traditional use and exceptional value for pollinators and birds.

Native to Eastern US and the primary larval host of the Baltimore checkerspot butterfly. The herb is used as a bitter digestive tonic.
Astragalus membranaceus
Huang Qi is native to China and used as a lung qi tonic. It is useful as an immune amphoteric. It is a legume and useful for meadow and pollinator planting.
Scutellaria baicalensis
Huang Qin is native to China and the root used to clear heat and dampness. It prefers partial sun and rich soil. Lovely violet blue flowers.
Penstemon digitalis
Northeastern native with elegant white tubular flowers. Excellent for bees, hummingbirds, and resilient plantings.
Codonopsis pilosula
Used in Asia as a traditional qi tonic, often as a substitute for Panax ginseng. Enjoys full to partial sun. Twining vines for trellis or fence plantings.
Schizachyrium scoparium
Classic native prairie grass with blue-green summer foliage and warm copper fall color. Drought tolerant once established.
Liatris spicata
Native vertical spikes of magenta-purple flowers. Magnet for butterflies and bees; thrives in sunny gardens.
Pycnanthemum torrei
Native and endangered. Although it is a mint, hungry deer will browse this one. Young plants need protection, but this plant is worth it; an outstanding nectar plant for pollinators.

Native moisture-loving perennial with lavender flowers. Suited to wet edges and rain gardens.
